1. I enjoyed your take on this. I recently rewatched the film after many years to prep for the Best Supporting Actress Smackdown The Film Experience blog is having this month looking at the nominees of 1964. It was better than I remembered and while I watched to give Grayson Hall’s performance another glance but like you it was Ava Gardner that blew me away. Hall is very good, making the vicious Judith Fellows somewhat sympathetic in her obliviousness to her repression but Ava’s Maxine is a living, breathing creation. I don’t understand how she wasn’t nominated, perhaps the academy couldn’t decide if she was lead or supporting and therefore was shut out of both.
